Open Up is a cultural project (2020-2023), co-funded by the Creative Europe programme that aims to bring to the surface and promote underrepresented artists, designers, craftspeople and performers located in the seven cities of the partner organisations. It furthermore aims to establish sustainable art practises amongst them, by providing the participants with training and knowledge through the project’s various actions, which include laboratories, workshops, festivals and exhibitions. Open Up intents to empower creators to develop their skills, present their works and create a new business model frameworks, which will enable them to sustain their work even after the end the project.

Fashion Lab
Training/Seminar description: 

This all-inclusive workshop is part of the Open Up project & is an introductory course to the different disciplines of Fashion mainly in the areas of Fashion design and Fashion media.

This 6-month program will prepare underrepresented creative practitioners to expand their creative skillset in different areas of fashion. At the end of the course participants are required to create a final piece of work whose medium depends on their chosen pathway. This will be an introductory course to teach participants of the processes necessary to design collections from concept to end product and create breathtaking campaigns that will inform the fashion industry today.

The 2 different pathways that participants will have to choose from are:

1) Fashion Design which includes Designing, Making Garments, Accessories, Upcycling and Presenting

2) Fashion Media which includes Fashion Photography, Fashion Film, Creative Direction, Art Direction and Styling.

Participants will have access to garment making facilities and will be able to work independently after a period of introduction and mentoring. Through Open Up they will enter a European network of artists and professional trainers and will have the opportunity to make connections in Cyprus and abroad. All participants will receive a certificate of participation at no cost.

 

The workshop will take place at NiMAC (19, Palias Ilektrikis, 1016 Nicosia), which is located in the Old City Centre of Nicosia, from May to November 2022, and is free of charge.

Profile of Participants:

  • Be interested in Fashion, creating Fashion imagery and/or be interested in Researching Fashion Cultures.
  • Be motivated to learn and develop their skills in making, designing, conceptualizing and critical dress theory.
  • Availability to commit from May 2022 – November 2022
  • Have a basic knowledge of English and/or Greek
  • Be over 18 years’ old

Applications will be accepted until 26th of April 2022.

Due to the limited number of places, an interview process may follow in order to select the final participants.

The workshop is organised by the Pierides Foundation that is associated with NiMAC [Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre], as part of the Open Up project. The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe’s Culture sub-programme of the European Union and implemented in 7 European countries: Cyprus, France, Greece, Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Spain.
