Open Up is a cultural project (2020-2023), co-funded by the Creative Europe programme that aims to bring to the surface and promote underrepresented artists, designers, craftspeople and performers located in the seven cities of the partner organisations. It furthermore aims to establish sustainable art practises amongst them, by providing the participants with training and knowledge through the project’s various actions, which include laboratories, workshops, festivals and exhibitions. Open Up intents to empower creators to develop their skills, present their works and create a new business model frameworks, which will enable them to sustain their work even after the end the project.

Design Lab
Training/Seminar description: 

This is a weekly, free-of-charge workshop which will guide its participants through the process of industrial design with the final aim of the team to collectively create a marketable product or service. The goal is to facilitate and accelerate the social integration process of underrepresented communities in Cyprus, such as immigrants and refugees. It will concentrate on testing and further developing the above potential product and services prototypes, by hosting meetings and trials.

The Lab is part of the European, cultural project Open Up. Participants will enter an international network of artists and professional trainers and will have the opportunity to make connections in Cyprus and abroad. All participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the programme.

When: Until June 2022, once a week in the weekends (we accept participants for a 6 week workshop)

Where: Art Hub at NiMAC (19, Palias Ilektrikis, 1016 Nicosia), located in the Old City Centre of Nicosia.

Profile of Participants:

  • Have any level of crafts knowledge (including a creative ability and a hands-on experience)
  • Preferably have a design background, however artists from other fields are also welcome
  • Have a design awareness
  • Have a business, planning and marketing background (optional)
  • Be willing to build and maintain positive relationships and to share information with others
  • Have determination to achieve an end result, optimism and enthusiasm when things do not go to plan
  • A three-month availability during weekends
  • Good knowledge of the English Language
  • Be over 18 years old

The workshop is organised by the Pierides Foundation that is associated with NiMAC [Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre] as part of the Open Up project. In Cyprus there are three Labs: the Design Lab, the Performance Lab and the Visual Arts Lab. The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe’s Culture sub- programme of the European Union and implemented in 7 European countries: Cyprus, France, Greece, Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Spain. This initiative has been developed to address the under- representation within the Arts, maximise diversity and reinforce the social and cultural integration of people through the arts. Its aim is to support and promote under-represented artists, designers, craftspeople and performers all over Europe through its various activities, workshops and festivals.

 

The workshop will comply with all official measures and relevant precautions for COVID-19, as issued by the Cyprus Ministry of Health.
